After flying over the tan deserts of Central Asia, I flew over the Caspian Sea, entering Eastern Europe through Romania, passing over Hungary and Slovakia. Looking out my window over Slovakia, it was only then I realised I had passed Prague, a city I will need to visit before I die. Falling asleep somewhere above Germany, I made my way over Amsterdam then awoke to find myself over the English channel and, at last, I saw before me the English coastline.
What initially greeted me were miles of milky white clouds, hovering above the British Isles, but when I finally made it to London, the clouds parted and rays of sunlight beamed through illuminating the busy London cityscape. It gave me hope and reassurance that, even though I had left so much behind, the future was still bright.
Upon entering immigration, I met an interesting Aussie bloke named Jeff. Jeff flew in from Sydney to complete a course in London before flying helicopter off to some distant oil rig or oil tanker. He was a sailor for Schlumberger, originally from Byron Bay, and also an alumni of UQ Science. He told me of his travels across the world as we waited in line. Travelling from the frigid seas of the north, all the way down to the Antarctic, visiting nearly everywhere in between. His well use passport showed stamps and visa's from Malaysia, Angola, Egypt, Thailand, Brazil, UK, Germany and very nearly much everywhere else imaginable. Not only was he well travelled, but he also had interesting views. Despite working for an oil company, he still supported the Carbon Tax, and despite being a high income earner, he didn't mind paying the flood levy.
Jeff also showed me through to the tube and all the way to Paddington Station. And upon parting, he gave me a ten pound note telling me that when I finally reached my destination, my first pint of beer was on him. What I didn't realise is that ten pounds buys far more than a pint of beer, so I'm working my way through the pints...
Couldn't quite see the stars, but eventually I'll see Betelgeuse. I hope.
Edwin
PS. Pictures to be added soon.
Interesting re: Jeff's support for carbon tax, and not minding the flood levy.
